Well, it is said that during Samundra Manthan ,when both Sur and Asur joined together to get a sacred nectar which could provide salvation or eternal to everyone, once they got it both sides started fighting for it so Lord Vishnu comes into his incarnation of a lady or an Apsara and made Sur won that nectar, but during all those , four drops of nectar fall on Earth on four Location which are Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar and Nasik, now Kumbh is celebrated in each of these places after 3 years on each location, so when it comes for Prayagraj it becomes 12 years , so Kumbh mela in Prayagraj only comes after 12 years.
